  • Nearly 12.5 million inhabitants (5 times less than France)

  • Area: about 650 000 km2 (about the size of France with overseas territories)

  • 19 inhabitants per km2 (against 210 in Switzerland)

  • 28 states (since the presidential decree of October 2015) subdivided into 180 counties.
    Originally the country was divided into 10 states.
    Each state is headed by a Governor and has its own ministries.

  • Juba, the capital, is also the capital of the State of Jubek in the Equatoria region. It has about 400 000 inhabitants.

  • 64 tribes. The Dinka represent 40% of the population, the Nuer 20%. There are also the Shilluk, the Zande, the Jur Chol, the Acholi, the Lotuhus...
    10 ethnic groups.

  • Official language: English.
    Many people communicate in Arabic ("Juba arabic").
    Dozens of local dialects, the most important being the Nuer-Dinka, spoken by over 1.3 million people.

  • 77% of the population is Christian. 21% are animist.

  • More than half the population is under 18. 
    One girl out of two is married between 12 and 19 years.
    16,000 child soldiers since the beginning of the civil war in late 2013.

  • 80% of the population is illiterate.
    Half of the children do not go to school.
    The lowest secondary schooling rate in the world.

  • The worst world health index. World record of infant and maternal mortality. Only 17% of children are vaccinated. Malaria is endemic.

  • More than half of the population live on less than $ 1 a day.

  • 80% of the population lack access to drinking water and toilets.

  • In 2016, the South Sudanese population is the one that suffers most from hunger in the world, after the ones of Yemen and Syria.
    1 of 2 inhabitants is in serious food insecurity.

  • Oil represents almost the only resource of the State.
    In 2016, 60% of oil resources are allocated to defence.
